Like T. E. Lawrence, I yearn to feel the scorching heat of Arabia and to confront, unflinchingly, the ghosts of my past — a history which, much like that of my fellow Portuguese, is, and always will be, inextricably intertwined with the East and with the spirit of adventure. And in the manner of Luís de Camões — or of Homer before him — I aspire to sing the Destiny of Humankind, whatever shape it may take at the hands of present or future political decision-makers. For better or worse, it is my duty to inform you, dear editor, that I shall do everything in my power to honour the commitment I have made as a journalist, and to ensure that the world’s injustices do not go unnoticed.
