Young Kim grew up in Uganda, East Africa where from an early age he was exposed to extreme poverty, crime and conflict. While studying at the University of Southern California - School of Cinematic Arts (2007-11) he started documenting civil unrest and human conflict. As a photojournalist, he has covered the struggle of immigrants, police brutality and the anti-war movement in Los Angeles. As a filmmaker and cinematographer he has worked on various narrative films and documentaries, some which have been official selections at international film festivals. During the nights he often worked the crime beat witnessing and filming gang violence. His video imagery has been featured on Al Jazeera, Vice, ABC News and LA Weekly among others.

Footage provided for a Al Jazeera “Faultlines - A Tale of Two Cities” (2012) - Documentary.
In July 2012, two young Latino men were shot and killed by Anaheim police. What followed was some of the worst civil unrest this city has ever seen. Protests against police brutality were met with riot-clad gear police and rubber bullets, further fuelling violence and bringing national attention to the home of Disneyland.
