Shaheen Buneri is a journalist from northwestern Pakistan. He studied English literature and political science and graduated from the University of Peshawar in 2000. Shaheen started his journalistic career as a staff reporter with English national daily the Statesman Peshawar in 2001. He reported on politics, society, cultural heritage and censorship issues in the conflict-ridden Tribal Areas and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In 2004, Shaheen joined Asian Vision Television (AVT), the first satellite TV channel in Pashto language that broadcasts for Pashtuns living in Pakistan, Afghanistan and the Pashtun Diaspora abroad. He worked as editor and documentary producer for AVT. In 2006, when Taliban militants dominated the Swat Valley of northwest Pakistan, Shaheen was the first journalist to file comprehensive stories for national and international media on the Taliban’s aggressive campaign against girls' education, musical expressions and anti-polio drops. He has also worked for the BBC World Service from Peshawar, producing radio reports covering the socio-political and cultural issues in the region, including live reports from the camps of the internally displaced people (IDPs). He has worked for United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF), Action Aid Pakistan and International Media Corps (IMC) as media and communication consultant. Shaheen currently works as journalist for Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Mashaal Radio in Prague, Czech Republic. For RFE/RL he produces news bulletins and live shows on the security and development issues in Pashtun-dominated areas along the Pak-Afghan border. He is reporting for the Pulitzer Center as a 2011 recipient of a Persephone Miel Fellowship.
